Demi Lovato Concert: California Mid State Fair
Hello again! I thought I'd better follow up my first post with some more details about what I've been up to so far. In case you didn't know this about me, I'm a really big Demi Lovato fan. Watching her on tv and seeing her grow older as I did was a really big part of my childhood; I still remember sneaking onto my iPod late at night to watch "Sonny With a Chance" on Disney channel. What really resonated with me through all these years, however, was her honesty about mental health and the struggles that are so real in so many people's lives. Working for Youthline - the teen to teen crisis line I volunteer at - and teaching about suicide in classrooms has really opened my eyes to how stigmatised mental health really is. We cringe when these topics are brought up yet it is the 2nd leading cause of teenage death in Oregon after automobile accidents. I think mental health is often thought to be an individual struggle when that is really not the case. I admire Demi Lovato so much for being able to open up to such a large platform about the importance of destigmatising mental health and challenging these social norms.
Ok so now that my rant is out of the way - back to the experience. I bought two tickets to see her show at the closest location possible: San Luis Obispo, California. It seemed so effortless and easy to plan this trip but turns out that getting to that freaking town was so much harder than I thought. First of all, it's in the middle of literally nowhere. Secondly, Portland has no direct flights to the small airport there. Thus, in order to get there, we were either going to have to fly to SLO via Montana or Seattle - which seems completely redundant I know.
Once we finally got there, I'd rented a cute little Airbnb on some yoga retreat place just outside of SLO. The promised pool and optional massages seemed a little too good to be true, but there was only one way to find out. The house and property were definitely very peaceful... But they'd failed to mention on the booking that it was also under construction at the time and that there would be a deaf dog that would come out of the bushes next to the pool and bark and scare the schnitzel out of you.
Ok ok, sorry; I'm a very distractable writer. The California Mid State Fair was amazing. There were people everywhere, music blaring, food smells - sweet, greasy, and savoury - all around, and the buzz of excitement in the air. We wandered around in the scorching heat for a couple of hours before the show and it was really nice being able to spend that time with my mum. Plus, we got to watch a baby pig race! It was the cutest thing I've ever seen and I discovered that pigs love Oreos. Elvis Pigsley - the one we were rooting for - unfortunately lost, but I'm sure his little legs tried their hardest so I don't hold it against him.
Ok, now concert time! I'm not a big crier but I'm not going to lie - I started crying the minute Demi walked onto that stage and did not stop until after the concert was over. Not just the picturesque tear slipping down your cheek in happiness crying. The kind where your body just doesn't know how to deal with the shock and ends up just opening the floodgates to an endless supply of tears. It was amazing. Her raw emotion, full-on performance, and open personality were awe inspiring to me.
As one of the first items on my bucket list to be checked off, I could not have wished to start off my gap year in any better way. All in all, this was one of the best experiences of my life and a memory that I will treasure forever - especially because it was spent with my mum, one of the most important people in my life.
